Fergus O'Ryan (1911-1989) was a major Irish artist of the 20th century. Born in Limerick in 1911, he studied under Richard Butcher at the Limerick School of Art and also attended the Dublin Metropolitan School of Art. He first exhibited at the Royal Hibernian Academy of Ireland in 1938 and afterward exhibited there nearly every year until 1984. In 1952 he supplied the illustrations for Patricia Lynch's Tales of Enchantment, and in 1953 he designed a stamp to mark An Tostal. In 1956 he won the President Hyde Gold Medal Award at the Oireachtas exhibition. In 1959 he was appointed an associate of the Royal Hibernian Academy, and became a full member in 1960.
